Falling in Love (with Pop Music... Again)

This is, perhaps, one of my new favorite songs. Yes, it's poppy and cheesy, but don't we all need a little bit of that these days? In a world plagued with emo and depression, with wars and guns and death, with heartache and sorrow, what better relief than a pop song? And a well-written pop song by a British band of 20-somethings who write and play their own instruments? They're apparently the youngest band to have an album debut at the top of the charts, a record previously held by another British band of mop-tops, The Beatles. Yet no one in America knows who they are, minus the 100 people who saw the Lindsey Lohan suckfest "Just My Luck," which featured the band and shares a title with one of their albums. But in the UK... it's the Jonas Brothers... A punkier, edgier, non-related, more talented Jonas Brothers.

I'm so tired of the "music" that dominates the radio these days. I avoid listening to it at all costs. The same tired songs play on every station, and even if I once liked one, after a day tuned in, I've heard it more times than I've heard "Mmmbop," and I no longer want to hear it. Ever. If one more song about a piece of candy or food comes out, undistinguished "lyrics" rapped over a loud, synthetic beat, inspiring club-goers to act out on the song's loosely-veiled innuendos, I might just claw my radio out of my car, leaving filmy pieces of sex under my fingernails.

Judge me if you want, 12 years of being a Hanson fan has me prepared for all types of mockery, but don't deny yourself the pleasure of slipping back to your pre-teen self, before all the worries about jobs and money took up your every moment, and enjoy the sweaty, British teen pop. The UK always did know how to make good pop music, after all.

  1. Down with emo. Nice to see something upbeat. & thanks for noting the lilo suckfest movie or it would have been driving me nuts trying to remember where I've heard them before.

All this talk of Hanson makes me remember another group I loved BBMak. Sigh...I wish they had gone further.
